Windows problem

My Windows (XP SP2) laptop which used to work well suddenly keeps acting strange. I do have reasonable security like a couple of anti virus, firewalls, etc.

Processes suddenly hang and more importantly, when I try to kill them using the task manager, the task manager hangs as well! Any pointers on what could be the problem and how to rectify?

PS: No "use linux instead" and other politico-religious posturing please.. Reasons for adopting a particular platform is more complicated than religious devotion or ideological infatuation.. If it is any consolation, I am not attached enough to windows (or any other technology) to sacrifice my life or happiness for its sake. Wink

Re: Windows problem

Did you try booting in safe mode and seeing if the problem still persists? If it does, the problem could be due to some program or service that is starting at boot time.

I haven't tried that; let me check. I did disable a lot of the services that start at boot time though the admin console. Besides, it works fine for a while after rebooting and this hanging problem manifests suddenly. So I wouldn't know how long to wait in the safe mode to see whether the problem still exists.

Are there any freely available tools for process monitoring or a hang-safe way of killing processes?

Thanks in advance
