Call for ideas: soundproofing

This is a general engineering question -- nothing to do with programming.

Calling for smart, inexpensive and effective ideas to reduce noise within homes. My biggest problem working from home are routine noises from outside like cars honking, dogs barking, etc.

Closing windows makes it too hot inside and does not reduce noise too much. I'm not interested in costly solutions like sound-proof windows alongwith air-conditioning.

I'm looking for solutions like some smart construction techniques (maybe using plexiglass or fibre) that can let fresh air into the house from outside but somehow deflect all the noise. A little bit of power consumption is ok in the proposed solution, but not power guzzlers like air conditioners.

Any pointers welcome. Thanks in advance.

Re: Call for ideas: soundproofing

There was an inverse problem in my guitar class. We used create such a racket that anybody outside would go crazy listening to 20 odd wannabe guitarists out of sync. Smiley To avoid such a problem, the walls were covered in polystyrene (thermocol) sheets. It also eliminated the echo in the room.

The other -- more environment friendly -- option is to place a lot of curtains, drapes and clothes at strategic places in the house.

I think so there should be a lot of sound reflecting surfaces outside and sound absorbing surfaces inside.
