Re: What are these strange terms?

karma is more or less similar to the karma on slashdot. It is a rating system where in a user gains karma every time someone applauds them and loses it every time someones smites them. Of course admins can just give or take away karma on whim (that explains why I have so much karma Wink).

Of course the usage of this term here stems from the gross misunderstanding by the Western world of the Sanskrit word karma (कर्म). While it actually refers to the concept of "action" or "deed", they have taken it to mean the "rating" that God gives you for your actions. This is made clear by statements like "doing bad things brings bad karma to you". It is further extended to imply that if you have bad karma, bad things happen to you (simple Googling brought up this interesting link that illustrates this misunderstanding: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/96318/what_brings_good_or_bad_karma_to_you.html).

Everyone can give themselves a "custom title" to themselves in their profile and mine is God Smiley.

Newbie is a concept maintained by this forum software to indicate that someone is new to the forum. Everyone here is currently a newbie considering that the forum itself is so new.

Re: What are these strange terms?

So how does one get promoted from a Newbie to a non-Newbie? (Oldbie? Wink)

I guess the system will automatically do that after some fixed amount of time since the user signed up. Not sure what this threshold is, though.

Re: What are these strange terms?

Hmmm... maybe we can put these to good use..

(I'm just thinking aloud here.. feel free to disagree or suggest something better).

I think that anything based on voluntary efforts will not last. Like the review processes for example. Maybe we should make it mandatory for anyone who puts up something for review to applaud their reviewers. And people should be able to exchange points from their karma for discounted registration for Oktave workshops.

How's that for starters?

Re: What are these strange terms?

This sounds good though I am not sure of how well it will work (are enough people going to applaud or smite?) But if it does work, this sounds like a very good incentive to get people to post instead of just being spectators.

Enough posts, I'm unable to read all of them. Both of you are too active.

Don't you worry, we didn't take it seriously at all!
