Google Chrome

You may have heard of Google's open source browser project called  Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/). From what I read, they are trying to come up with an architecture such that each tab can be rendered as a separate process -- instead of the the whole browser (all tabs included) being a single process (single-threaded).

Looks like it has some really cool features. Visit the above link for more details.

All those problems with current browsers that they have described in the comic... so true.

The beta version of the browser was supposed to be released today.

Re: Google Chrome

I've been using it since this morning and I'm totally flipping, it's just what the doctor recommended! There are several other subtle improvements they have done which didn't get a mention in the comic.

You can download it at http://www.google.com/chrome/ (Windows only; Linux and Mac versions are under development).

Lucky you! Smiley

I've been trying to download it since last night, but due to some flimsy reason or the other (like server jams, connectivity failure, and so on and so forth), I am unable to!

Re: Google Chrome

Chrome is generally cool, but it does have its share of minor irritants. Click on the arrows next to Search and Quick Links above (in a Chrome browser). The menu doesn't open for me.

Also the behaviour of textarea is strange. Home doesn't home the cursor on blank lines and in some pages, the area becomes all muddled after a delete/edit of some characters.

Re: Google Chrome

Been using it for a couple of days. It is good. But once or twice I caught myself using Firefox inadvertently. And that is good too! Is Chrome better than Firefox? I am not sure. The search feature in the address bar in Chrome is good in that it is less obtrusive than that is FF3. On the other hand, search feature in FF3 is cleverer, I think: if I start typing in 'Oktave' in FF3, it immediately suggests forum.oktave.in; in Chrome, I have start typing in 'forum' to get this.

A problem I am facing with Chrome is that scrolling is very fast. I am not sure why.

Will it always be a beta like GMail ?  Wink

1) Amazing browser for a first release. Expected off Google. They've been working on this for 2 years apparently.
2) Will it have add-ons ?
3) Amazing JS execution speeds
4) Still like Opera better  Smiley
5) Strange name - Chrome..

Re: Google Chrome

Everybody around me was using it. So I finally got it working under wine in Linux; checked out how it was. Under wine there are lots of problems, the primary one being no https access (no logins). Looks good. Waiting for the linux version.

5) Strange name - Chrome..

The explanation for the name is in the link below.

You may have heard of Google's open source browser project called  Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/).

Re: Google Chrome

Every tab is supposed to be a separate process; so one tab hanging should not affect the functioning of other tabs.

But couple of times, when I pressed Ctrl-T for opening a new tab, the entire broswer hung. Worse, I open my task master to kill the processes, and even that hangs! Finally, I had to reboot the machine! This happened to me more than once.

I too experienced the same problem a few times. On one or two occasions, it hung probably because the new tabs were spawned off some parent tab (Ctrl+click), and hence they were not "independent". But if one does a Ctrl+T, then the new tab is definitely a separate process, and yet the browser hangs because of one bad tab.

Compared to Firefox, Chrome seems to be somewhat slower too.

But then it does have some good features. Let's hope it gets better with the next version.
