Stars migrate!

I had read something interesting some time back: that some astrophysicists were questioning the popular belief that stars stay in a fixed orbit around the center of their galaxy. And today, I came across this article in the National Geographic News (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/09/080918-star-migration.html), which reported the work done by a grad student named Rok Roškar in this regard. Roškar et al. conducted computer simulations for a hypothetical galaxy similar to Milky Way in terms of size, dynamics, etc. They found that a spiraling arm of the galaxy can change the orbit of a star and push it farther from (or closer to) the center of the galaxy.

Thus, a star could migrate from its galaxy! The article also reports that, according to this study, about half the stars within 130 light years of the Sun seem to have migrated across galaxies, thus suggesting that the Sun might also have done the same.
